The hacker group stole the funds over the last six years, which was likely used to fund the country’s projects, a report said. (Swanson Oh, Coin Desk Korea) – North Korea-linked hacker organisation Lazarus Group has stolen $3 billion in cryptocurrency over the past six years, according to a report by cyber security firm Recorded Future. The report released on Thursday reveals that in 2022 alone, the group plundered $1.7 billion in cryptocurrency, likely to fund North Korean projects. Blockchain data analysis firm Psychoanalysis indicates that out of this total, $1.1 billion was stolen from decentralised finance (Devi) platforms. A September report published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as part of its Analytic Exchange Program (APE).
Sinbad’ was added to the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s specially designated sanctions list by the U.S. Treasury Department as part of new sanctions against North Korea’s cyber activities. Sinbad has been connected to the money laundering of the cryptocurrency that the Lazarus Group pilfered.
It is well known that the group concealed the source of the pilfered money by using Sinbad’s mixer services. These mixers combine the transactions of several users to mask individual transaction trails.
The Lazarus Group specialises in financial theft. They stole $81 million through a hack on the Bangladesh Central Bank in 2016. In 2018, they attacked the Central Bank of Malaysia, stealing $390 million, and broke into the Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coin check, diverting $530 million.
